Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, influence, and information.

Our identity is increasingly becoming digitized—more of our hard copy credentials are converting into digital formats. We use these digital credentials to work, learn, play, socialize, shop, and consume services online and offline every day.

It’s so convenient and expected now to be able to have these aspects of life accessible at our fingertips. More than half the global economy is based on or influenced by digital.1 Digital information becomes fluid and interconnected across services.
However, it’s not always under our control as individuals.

Digital identity is now on the verge of a major transformation into one that is more secure, privacy-respecting, and portable. Identity was not fundamentally built into the internet, which has resulted in companies building singular relationships with each of us.

Instead, the garage would have to try to help me remember which auto clubs I might be affiliated with by showing me logos until I see one I recognize.

Everything goes through me

When I interact with the garage, I’m the person presenting my credential and I’m the person getting a receipt back. No real-time interaction is needed with the auto club, which is lucky because it’s the middle of the night.
But I am aware of the interactions in real time, and if I want to, I can compare my receipts from all the breakdowns my car has had, see trends in what kinds of transactions I’ve been a part of, and even find places where I’ve been overcharged or where the promises of the transaction haven’t materialized. This is because I was an agent in the direct presentation.

RWD simply enables improved protocol design and site selection strategy, which results in improved patient enrollment and a better chance of improving patient outcomes primarily through the real-world evidence (RWE) it produces.

More than 80% of organizations surveyed in a Deloitte report said they were creating strategic partnerships to access new RWD sources. Expanded access to RWD in China, Germany, and Japan is especially a priority given their RWE strategies beyond the U.S.

These RWE strategies are surely a big driver of the overall trends.
Deloitte found the areas of RWE’s greatest impact center on use cases with a long history of leveraging RWE, including understanding the burden of disease, monitoring patient safety, and comparative effectiveness research.

The products in the Entra family will help provide secure access to everything for everyone, by providing identity and access management, cloud infrastructure entitlement management, and identity verification.

The need for trust in a hyperconnected world

Technology has transformed our lives in amazing ways. It’s reshaped how we interact with others, how we work, cultivate new skills, engage with brands, and take care of our health.

It’s redefined how we do business by creating entirely new ways of serving existing needs while improving the experience, quality, speed, and cost management.

Behind the scenes of all this innovation, millions and millions of connections happen every second between people, machines, apps, and devices so that they can share and access data.

Federated presentation is a modern workhorse when it comes to use cases like enterprise single sign-on, and there will continue to be many places where involving the user in a presentation ceremony will never make sense. The good news is that we have specifications that can help federated and direct models to co-exist, and we are working in the OpenID Foundation, the Decentralized Identity Foundation, and other standards bodies to find an interoperable balance.

If you want a sneak peek, check out Kristina Yasuda and Torsten Lodderstedt at the recent OAuth Security Workshop, talking about some of their work that leverages the Self-Issued Identity Provider section of the OpenID Connect specification.

This work truly bridges the worlds of Direct and Federated Presentation models.

Take a look in your physical wallet. Maybe you have some credit cards and probably identification of some kind. Do you have a roadside assistance card, perchance? The cards we carry and present every single day feel different than many common digital credentials (such as federated credentials) that identify us and communicate our attributes online, but that gap is narrowing.

As the identity ecosystem looks at emerging paradigms for trust and individual agency in our online interactions, we see use cases where the federated identity model we know so well in the real world might work to provide more digital autonomy and control.
We call this model the “presentation model” because an end user collects and controls the presentation of their credential when and where they choose.

Coca-Cola innovation collided with our supply chain system,” says Bob Means, Director of Business Solutions at Coca-Cola Bottling Company United. “Replenishing the high-tech, small flavor cartridges was best done by outsourcing production, but it created a back-office nightmare.”

Processing a cartridge replacement required a dedicated customer relationship management (CRM) agent to manually push it through a complex 11-step process involving multiple disparate systems, such as SAP and more. A single agent could service only 50 Freestyle orders; however, nearly 50,000 orders were in the queue.

Power Automate provided an ideal solution, automating repetitive processes across Windows and web applications.

They went from purchasing licenses to an RPA solution in production within a short span of four weeks. The RPA solution saved them 300 hours a year in invoicing for this supplier alone, and they’re now expanding it to cover all suppliers.

Reduce access risk across clouds

The adoption of multicloud has led to a massive increase in identities, permissions, and resources across public cloud platforms. Most identities are over-provisioned, expanding organizations’ attack surface and increasing the risk of accidental or malicious permission misuse.

More specifically, the value of and need for optimizing clinical trial operations and removing bottlenecks has been brought to the forefront because of the pandemic-related delay of hundreds of clinical trials.

This represents an important opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry. With momentum from successful COVID-19 vaccines, companies are racing to speed up the clinical trial process for other drugs.

This means developing new access points for patients, adopting AI to compress screening requirements, and expanding diversity as part of a broader effort to more effectively communicate participation benefits.

One theme that is emerging from the pandemic is an increasing appetite for developing direct relationships with patients into the pharma business model. This will fundamentally drive change across the clinical trial patient engagement spectrum.
